Pokemon Go Guide & Where To Catch Rare Pokemon In Singapore

Pokemon Go was finally released for play in Singapore on 06 Aug 2016. This smash hit game was released one month earlier in Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Due to server strain from high demand upon release, other regions release were delayed to fix the issues.

Pokemon Go is a free-to-play, location-based augmented reality game developed by Niantic which can be played with an iOS i-phone or an Andriod smart phone. In this game, players will need to travel between the real world and the virtual world of Pokemon in a ‘Real’ world gaming platform which use real locations to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokemon. The ultimate objective of the game is to catch and evolve the original 151 Pokemon as you explore the surroundings to complete the entries in the Pokedex, so you ‘gotta catch em all’.

While player moves around either in cities or in towns, the Pokemon Go apps will trigger the smartphone to vibrate whenever he/she is near a Pokemon. During an encounter with a wild Pokemon, the player takes aim on their smartphone’s touch screen and throw a Poke Ball at it by flicking from the bottom of the screen up toward the Pokemon to try catch it. If the Pokemon is successfully caught, it will come under the ownership of the player.

Factors in the success rate of capture include the right force, the right time and the type of Poke Ball used. After a Pokemon is captured, the player is awarded two types of in-game currencies: candies and stardust. The candies awarded is depended on what evolutionary chain a Pokemon belongs to.

A player can use stardust and candies to raise a Pokemon’s combat power (CP), however only candies are required to evolve a Pokemon. Each Pokemon evolution tree has its own type of candy which can only be used to evolve or level up. The player can also transfer the Pokemon back to the Pokemon professor to earn more candies and also to create room for more Pokemon.

All Pokemon are displayed with a combat power (CP). CP is a rough measure of how powerful that a Pokemon can be in battle. Not all Pokemon of the same species will have the same CP. Rule of thumb is when a player levels up, they will tend to catch Pokemon with higher CP.

After you have depleted of Poke Balls, you can replenish them with other useful items at a PokeStop which are usually located at interesting places such as monuments, famous architectural buildings, fountains, statues, shopping malls and many etc.

Before you start your Pokemon journey, you will get to customize the look of your Trainer by choosing the apparel and accessories to give him/her a cool look. The customized character will appear as you move around the map and also in your profile page.

Gain levels as a Trainer and catch more powerful Pokemon when you advance to higher levels to complete your Pokedex. Other than catching different type of Pokemon, you can also evolve one of the species when you have caught enough of the same. You may have a chance to hatch a rare Pokemon from Pokemon Eggs after you have walked a specific distance. Above show evolution of some of the Pokemon.

Other game feature includes joining a Team and Battle. When you have joined one of the three teams, you will gain the ability to assign Pokemon you have caught to open Gym locations or to a Gym where a team member has assigned a Pokemon. Only one Pokemon can be assigned at a particular Gym, so you will need to collaborate with other members of your team to build up a strong defense.

Battling in a Gym can earn fast experience and helps to level up your Trainer faster. When a rival team has taken over a Gym, you can challenge it using your Pokemon to battle the defending Pokemon. Each Pokemon has two attacks and is able to dodge the attacks if you swipe left or right. If you win the battle, then the Gym’s Prestige is reduced. When the Gym’s Prestige drops to zero, the defending team loses control of the Gym and another player or you can assign a Pokemon to defend it.

Once your team has taken control of the Gym, team members can increase the Gym’s Prestige and level by battling the defending Pokemon. These training battles against your own team help level up the Gym and your Pokemon as well. As the Gym advances to higher level, your team can assign more Pokemon to defend it. You may also team up with your friends and battle at a rival Gym together to take down stronger Gyms faster.

When a player encounters a Pokemon, they may view it either in augmented reality (AR) mode or with a live rendered, generic background. Fun features enable the players to take screenshots of the Pokemon they encounter either with or without the AR mode activated.

These are the screenshots taken without AR mode.

Pokemon Go’s viral popularity has brought back a generation of nostalgic fans into the world of 3D imagination by bringing the 90s monster-catching Pokemon craze to smartphones. Since the very first week of its release, Pokemon Go has made headlines for leading players into dangerous situations as they tracked down Pokemon in the real world. Some got into fatal traffic accidents while some got injured and many got into dangerous situation linked to the game. Nevertheless, I would still say that Pokemon Go is still a very good game which has made people to get out of their houses, make bonding with families and friends, exercising and of course making new friends while exploring their environments.

Some of the popular places for Pokemon catching in Singapore includes:

In East Coast Park, you will likely to find Cubone, Rhyhorn, Lapas and Hitmonchan.

Changi Village has rares like Hitmonlee, Kabuto, Drowsee and even Snorlax and Aeroductyl.

Orchard ION is where many others have caught Charlizard.

Yishun Park is known to have charmander and Lickitung.

Wildlife Reserves Singapore (Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari, River Safari and Singapore Zoo) are places which you can't miss. WRS has even provided special edition Pokemon Go park maps and Pokemon Trainer' Wildlife Survival Guide to help you on your mission!

The game is fun, but not worth in risking your own safety and others’ for. I hope people read this and put safety first while having fun at catching Pokemon. Enjoy the game and good luck in catching your Pokemon.
